Day Camp Assistant Director

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Youth Programs Director, this position will assist in the overall operations of day camp. The ideal candidate will feel comfortable in a leadership role and assisting with hiring, supervising staff, staff training, communicating effectively and professionally with both staff and parents, working directly with registrars, counselors, and specialty staff. They should be strong role-models for children exemplifying the 5 core values of YMCA of the Rockies; Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith.

What We Offer

Essential Functions / Requirements:

  • Assist in interviewing, hiring, supervising, and evaluation of Youth Programs staff
  • Act as director of Day Camp when Youth Programs Director is off site
  • Responsible for overseeing and managing programming
  • Assist in planning and implementing of Day Camp Staff Training
  • Assist in planning, implementation, and evaluation of Day Camp programming
  • Assist in evaluation of Day Camp staff throughout the summer
  • Assist in managing a budget
  • During Day Camp, responsible for the after-camp program with assistance from Specialty Counselors
  • Assist in maintaining YMCA, ACA, and Social Services Child Care Center standards
  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance
  • Understand and follow all emergency procedures associated with day camp
  • Understand and follow all safety guidelines for day camp
  • Clear communication with parents about campers experiences at day camp
  • Ensure that day camp sites are kept clean, organized, and free of litter
  • Promote a cooperative, positive, and problem-solving environment at all times
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a diverse environment
  • Currently possess, or are willing to get, Wilderness First Aid and CPR/First Aid certification
  • May be required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. in various forms

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must have at least one year experience working at a residential or day camp
  • Experience working with children required
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Must be working towards or hold a degree in recreation, education, or related field
  • Possess excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to plan, lead, organize, and implement program activities
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Ability to work with little direct supervision
  • Fluent in speaking, writing, and reading English
  • Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, swimming, team building activities, campfires, skits, and physical games

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Able to work outdoors in all weather, hiking large distances over varied terrain.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and carry up one (1) flight of steps.
  • Short bursts of stooping, kneeling, bending, standing for long periods of time, etc.
  • Prolonged periods at a computer and on the phone.
