Hikemaster (2025)

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Hikemaster leads guests, members and YMCA staff on hikes and provides interpretation in and around the YMCA grounds, Rocky Mountain National Park and regional national forests. The Hikemaster also provides customer service and administrative support at the hiking desk.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Safely lead groups on hikes and nature walks of 2 to 20 miles in a variety of weather conditions
- Engage in conversation for long periods of time and keep people involved and educated
- Sign up to lead hikes by the deadline each week
- Attend and participate in weekly hikemaster staff meetings
- Know and adhere to hiking policies and procedures set forth by YMCA of the Rockies
- Answer questions and give guidance and hiking suggestions at hiking desk in Mountain Center
- Use a computer to assist guests in enrolling for guided hikes and enter data prior to and after hikes
- Handle cash/credit cards and use a cash register to record deposits for borrowed hiking equipment and merchandise sales
- Call hikers prior to hikes to confirm attendance and make logistical arrangements
- All other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have up-to-date certifications in Wilderness First Aid and CPR (Can be obtained during training)
- Must have successfully completed the Hikemaster In Training (HIT) program (Can be obtained during training)
- Must have knowledge of RMNP and surrounding areas
- Must have a high degree of skill working with people of all ages
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must meet acceptable criminal background check standards
- Must be able to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to hike 5- 20 miles per day in remote areas
- Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds of gear
- Must be able to converse with people of all backgrounds for up to 15 hours at a time
- Must be able to squat, stoop, bend and stand for long periods of time
